A good deed for Christmas

Bikes for Tykes Ad - November 2007

Plenty of people have old, well-loved bikes stored away in their garage or basement, doing nothing but gathering dust. At the same time, plenty of disadvantaged kids would love a bike for Christmas, but aren’t getting one due to family circumstances.

Obsession: Bikes tries to fix that imbalance, and right now are running ads for their Bikes For Tykes program. If you’re around the North Vancouver area you can drop off bikes in any condition, and they’ll do them up and make sure they get to the people that need them most. It’s an awesome program, and I was stoked to be on board when Matt from Emdoubleyu Design and myself were asked to come up with a campaign for the local media.

It turned out great: we shot on a perfect overcast day to get great, soft light with no hassles carting studio equipment around, the images then had a quick tweak in Photoshop to give the desaturated, lonely look to the bike that I’m using more and more these days.

Apparently Obsession: Bikes are already seeing the donations roll in, so it seems to be doing the right job.

  1. This seams like something that is done here in Edmonton, called Sports Central.

They take all sorts of sports equipment and give it to Children in need, when i worked at United Cycle we gave Hundreds of bikes to them.

    Makes you feel good :)

I think it’s important for people to support these causes. To some one an old bike is a means of cheap transportation if anything.
