Dogs Unlimited

Last weekend, while up in the Yukon for a feature on snow biking (stay tuned to Bike Magazine sometime early next year), I was lucky enough to catch the start of something I’ve never experienced before – a dog sled race!  I only had a couple of hours before we were due to start shooting bikes, so hung around (in -20ºC weather, no less) for some of the racers’ preparations for their 1000 mile journey, and amazing start of what’s an instant favourite of mine – the Yukon Quest .

Really quite impressive to see so many dogs working together, doing something they obviously love and live for.  Anyone who considers dog-sled racing “cruel” should take the time out to witness the spectacle; the fact I can do it while “working” is something I’ll forever be grateful for.  While you’re checking out the gallery below, spare a thought for the racers involved, both human and animal – they’re still out there, and will be for another week at least!

    Hey Dan,
Didn’t get to meet you while you were in Whitehorse but I lent my Pugsley to your journalist friend. FYI, my sister Michelle Phillips was racer #4 who is in a couple of your shots. They look great.
    Cheers

    Hi Dan,

Just wondering what type of dog breed is Lucas in your ‘wet dog’ photo. Its so cute we’re trying to see if we can buy one but can’t quite figure out what breed it is.
    Love your photos.

    Cheers
    Kate

    Hi Kate!

Unfortunately Lucas is just a passing accquaintance so I’m not entirely sure – I agree though, he’s really cool. You could try emailing Obsession Bikes (http://obsessionbikes.com/) as owner James, whose dog it is, would surely know.
